Pasta & Fireworks – Big Bang and Bright Lights!

Submitted by: Karen Zahler

On Saturday, July 18, Pasta Night/Carnivale Italiano day at Nob Valley started with fun and games for the kids as well as the adults.  Laura Gibbons took charge of the kids’ events and held an array of games.  Starting at kiddie pool was a coin toss, and eventually the kids graduated to a splash contest.  Afterwards, the children raced to fill the bucket with water game - the kids scooped water and passed it down the line into the bucket.  Then the adults played and it was very a lot of fun seeing the ladies beat the men.  Raft races were won by the big kids, Alison and Kathy, but the best game was the scavenger hunt were the kids had to find items like pictures in front of the Nob Valley sign or sunscreen—a great time was had by all!  Thanks, Laura, for leading these events!

Later at 6 pm, Nob Valley’s Events Committee held their annual Pasta Dinner. About eight families participated and almost $175 was raised by this event.  Besides a healthy green salad and Italian breads, the guests were offered two types of lasagna, spaghetti & meatballs, mussels marinara, sausages, and many, many other different types of pasta.

The dessert table drew interest with a yellow cake decorated like an Italian flag, scrumptious brownies and pan cookies, biscotti, several chocolate yummy cakes, and fresh watermelon. The winner of the dessert contest was Sarah Perlowitz , who not only made dessert biscotti, but also made Rachel Ray’s Cowboy Spaghetti.  For her culinary efforts, Sarah received a $25 cash prize. Many families had guests who joined tables in the Pavilion and had a feast.  Music was provided by Showstoppers’ sound system and Italian favorites played while people ate.  I noticed a lot of people had brought cheeses, meats and other appetizers to enhance their dinner, and many bottles of wine were opened and passed around.

In all, the dinner was a success, and many of the diners stayed around for the fireworks show from the Carnivale Italiano, which began promptly at 10 pm.  Before the fireworks began, families brought light sticks and Laura provided at cost finger lights and flashing rings to interested children.  It was fun seeing the children running through the playground in a game of Manhunt, and as night fell, the children gathered in the play set clubhouse, with their glowing treasures provided an amusing show of moving light viewable through the darkness. The fireworks were, as usual, beautiful.  The low lights were blocked by our trees, and we are hoping next year the maintenance committee can trim the tops for better visibility (wink, wink), but the gorgeous high lights where clearly visible, and everyone gathered poolside to view them.  The show ended around 10:30, and people cleaned up and promptly cleared the club to head home.

We want to extend a big “Thank you!” to pool manager Vicky and her staff for their help in making the event fun and enjoyable for our members!

Nob Valley Organizes to Fight Cancer

We have all been touched by cancer in one-way or another.  It is important for our future and the future of our children to work towards a cure for this deadly disease.  Karen Zahler, one of our members,  would like to organize a fundraiser for cancer research.  One of the ways to do this is through the Swim Across America group and their National Pool Program (swimacrossamerica.org/national_pool).

Karen would like to know if NVSC members would be interested in holding and participating in this event.  She thinks it would be a great way to teach our kids about giving back to our community.  Please email Karen@zahler.com if you are interested in helping and/or swimming in this fundraiser.
