Fireworks & Pasta Night July 18

(submitted by Karen Zahler)

Games, food and fun ……. what better combination can there be?

Saturday, July 18, NOB Valley Swim Club stays open late so our members can view the fireworks show at the Italian Festival from the pool seating area.  No hassle with crowds, no problem to get out of packed parking lots, and you can sit comfortably at a table with your family. Well, maybe the kids won't be sitting with the family.....  The children usually make their own “fireworks” with their friends.  Members have been known to bring glow sticks for the kids, and fingertip lights are rumored to be available for sale for $2 ($1 goes to NVSC).  Please bring sweatshirts, blankets, and bug spray.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, the Events Committee is planning to hold kid games in the pool and on the grounds during the afternoon, and at 6 pm NOB Valley's Annual Pasta Dinner begins!  The menu items so far include:

  • Bread
  • Salad
  • Lasagna
  • Veggie Lasagna
  • Mussels Marinara
  • Penne with Sausage
  • Bow Tie Pasta with Vodka Sauce and Peas
  • Ziti & Meatballs

The Reviews Are In !

(submitted by Karen Zahler)

Friday, July 10 was the first good weather opportunity to hold Movie Night at the Club; Hotel for Dogs played before an audience of about forty children and adults.  Families brought blankets, beach chairs and assorted snacks and drinks.  For those who did not have any food or drinks, the Events Committee sold bagged cookies and goldfish crackers and slices of watermelon along with bottled water.  The Snack Shack also stayed open late selling ice cream and food and soda.  The movie started when it got dark enough – around 8 pm.  Adults who did not want to watch the movie gathered poolside for wine, cheese and conversation. Some of the older kids began a game of Manhunt and moved down to the Pavilion for this game.

Hotel for Dogs is a cute family movie with some laughs and giggles in it for both children and adults.  The story is about two dog-loving orphaned children and their friends who find an abandoned hotel, and they rescue strays from the dog pound, junkyards and city streets.  One child is a genius inventor who makes feeding machines, as well as a dog bathroom.  It is based upon a novel by Lois Duncan, and was promoted last year in the theatres that for every ticket sold, money went toward a charity set up to help homeless animals.  (To find out more information on helping homeless animals, check out www.dogsrule.com.)  My favorite part of the movie was when they played the walking music from Kill Bill, but I heard the laughing consistently throughout the movie. Yes, there is some poop humor, but it’s harmless.

Thanks to Tom Scarpa for setting up the projector and sound for the movie, and to the Events Committee and Snack Shack for providing the food service.  And thanks to the families who came  to Movie Night!  If you have any suggestions or comments regarding Movie Night, please send them to Michelle Scarpa tmsj521@verizon.net or Laura Gibbons info@showstoppersplus.com.  Next Movie Night is July 24, and we’ll be showing High School Musical 3.  See you there!
